Previously, on THE VAMPIRE DIARIES...

Oh, Thursdays, how I love thee! A new episode of The Vampire Diaries airs tonight. As I'm cable-free these days, I have to wait until the episode becomes available online tomorrow. Sooo let's chat about the episodes thus far, shall we?

1) I've been in love with Damon's character since I was 11. The love triangle, wherein he's always on the outside looking in, is killing me. In the books, he remained a dark temptation, but I'm hoping that the writers will see fit to change things up a little. See, I think that Katharine and Stefan, Elena and Damon would work out fantastically. Elena has gone a long way towards redeeming Damon. After 140+ years of vampiric solitude, he has a friend and that friend is leading to other friends and even a reconciliation with his brother. Can he ever be worthy of her? Worthy of any happiness or peace after the (undead) life he's lived? And that scene, where we see Stefan so completely in love with Katharine in 1864? Surprisingly emotional. She didn't intend for him to become a vampire. She just intended, with big-bad-vampires chasing her, to fake her death and get the heck out of Dodge. That hardly seems as diabolical as we've been led to believe she is. She's done some crazy things, some manipulative, horrible, bitchy things but I never thought I'd see her as anything other than two-dimensional evil villain. Is there any chance of her redeeming herself in Stefan's eyes?

2) I'm tired of the special effect of a vampire super-speeding, ala the FLASH!, around a stunned-looking vampire and/or human. I would think that a super-fast vampire could catch another super-fast vampire instead of just standing there looking shocked and confused. It's like, "Weeeeee! I'm going to run around you really fast and then we'll stop and talk!"

3) I have taken an instant dislike for Rose. Most of all, because she looks like a dead-ringer for that girl-vampire chick in the Twilight movies. I mean, really, why not hire the same actress and have done with it? Also, the older three vampires we met in Rose with their spotty accents? Drove me bananas! If the sign of super old vampires is that they aren't sure if they're British or not when they speak, then we should look into a Madonna/Paltrow vamp cover-up. ;)

4) So Damon, in Rose, said that he was about to say the most selfish thing he'd ever said but couldn't be selfish so he was going to erase Elena's memory of that selfish thing said, which was, "I love you." Is it selfish to tell someone that you love them? I don't think so. (If they don't reciprocate your love it can be awkward, unfortunate, or embarrassing but I don't think it is particularly selfish, let alone the most selfish thing one could say.) I think that he feels that the selfish thing would be to pull Elena in, especially when he sees himself as being unworthy of her, and he seems to have the feeling that if he said, "I love you", that Elena might do something about it--that it might interfere with her relationship with Stefan. Because frankly, I think, by wiping her memory of that confession, he was selfishly preserving his friendship with her.

5) I am actually really happy with Caroline-as-a-vampire. Her maturation and blooming self-confidence are awesome to see. Tyler, too, is becoming a better-fleshed, more sympathetic character. *thumbs up* Matt...not so much. We never see him and when we do, he's little more than set dressing. :/

6) This town is just numb to death, yeah? So when Party Chick A is killed in a freak accident and then her bff, Party Chick B, goes missing on the same night...nobody got suspicious? Nobody thought they could be related? And was the locker memorial at the high school for the dead chick or for the missing girl? Either way, I think the Sheriff needs to spend more time at work. ;)

7) I wonder how long Elena/Stefan will be 'broken up'. While the long, clinging hug after her rescue might suggest she's changed her mind about staying apart until she can wake up feeling safe, she did go home to her brother and her best friend and left her vamp sometimes-boyfriend always-rescuer out in the cold. It seems like their issues only ever last an episode or two before it is back to soulmates-forever territory.

8) I read somewhere that the producers thought about getting the show to a place where it becomes a Scooby Gang versus Monster of the Week type gig. That sounds disappointing. If this becomes Buffy: Reinvented instead of steering its own speedy quick-change course, I'll be sad.

A pretty good fan-made Damon/Elena video. :)
