Stuff and Nonsense
Jul. 2nd, 2009 02:44 pm1. Rhiannon, they're apricots. (I'm an idiot. English. Not my best language. ;) ) Only these are a paler hybrid they're calling "angelcots" which is a lame marketing technique but nonetheless--yummy produce from Trader Joe's.
2. Thanks to Rhiannon, I'm now somewhat hooked on So You Think You Can Dance. I hate all the forced jokes and time-killing, but watching the dancers dance and having so many genres represented was pretty damn entertaining. I just need to tape it so I can fast-forward past all the talkie-talk.
3. Tomorrow, we're going on a Fourth of July weekend road trip to the wilds of Wisconsin. It was a last-minute decision we're still scrambling to organize, but Daniel feels compelled to get away from his work for awhile. Otherwise, with his schedule, he'd just stay here and work through the holiday. It should be fun and woodsy instead of my neighborhood's usual celebration of amateurs lighting illegal fireworks from their rooftops or shooting off firearms. :)
4. I went on Tuesday to my local movie theatre for their Babies & Moms matinee showing of Up!. Graeme was good throughout the show. At the end he got a little antsy and ran up and down the aisle I was sitting in. It helped that the theatre was almost empty and that I'd packed my purse full of contraband toddler snacks. I cried from pretty much the opening credits through the end.
5. I wonder why so many acclaimed books have to be tragic? I mean, just like Oscar winning movies, there seem to be a lot of stillborn babies, instances of rape and incest, and shockingly sudden deaths in award-winning fiction. The general theme seems to be, "Life sucks and then you die." I'm not a fan. I read Lee Smith's On Agate Hill this week. It is exquisite and dire at the same time. In contrast, I'm reading Kelley Armstrong's new supernatural YA The Awakening and am entertained by its brainless, aimless fluff qualities. There is probably a happy middle ground somewhere, but for now I'm happy with the fluff. :) I can't help but wonder if the author intended to write something so similar to L.J. Smith's Dark Visions trilogy of a decade ago.
6. My summer schedule has become pretty packed. Between SpiralScouts camping and visits to friends, there is no slow-up in sight. That's nice. June's been quietly spent at home. I'm ready for some adventures, some new scenery. :)
7. Graeme painstakingly climbed up into my easy chair to try to put a plastic egg shell on my head as a hat. He thinks it is hilarious to pretend everything is a hat. Toddler silliness. :D I've been taking a photo of him every day for almost a month now for Flickr. I realize through it that he's got a pretty sweet life and therefore, so do I.
:)
I hope you all have a happy, safe weekend!
