Let's discuss last night's episode of The Vampire Diaries, if you watch such stuff.

1. Damon is one broken dude. I felt hugely sympathetic to him when he restored Elena's vamp-protective vervain necklace to her and said he hadn't compelled her when he could have because he was having fun with her that day and wanted it to be real. [livejournal.com profile] neva_butterfly has pointed out his creepy sociopathic tendancies better than anyone, though, so it didn't fly over my head that as he was gently putting the necklace back on and showing he trusted her, he was also quietly threatening her if she disappointed him again. In real life, that'd be evil. In my bad-boy vampire fantasy world, it is mildly thrilling.

So he's pinned all hopes for a happy eternal life on Katharine. I mean, every single day of his 140-whatever years as a vampire, being reunited with her has been his drive. Now, anticlimactically, to discover that she wasn't trapped in that tomb needing his rescue, that, in fact, she'd rescued herself quite handily and hadn't given one thought to the fact that he was a newly-turned vampire and might need some help of his own?

140+ years that she'd not bothered to track down the two brothers she'd seduced, shared blood with, and led (somewhat accidentally on the timing) to their becoming vampires? And she wasn't tracking them down? Wow. She even knew where Damon was and didn't go see him--not once? She was as self-centered and manipulative as everyone said.

What will happen to him now that his motivating force is gone? What does life mean if the one shred of his humanity, his blind and boyish love for Katharine, is stripped away? Obviously, he isn't finding the whole vampire power trip entirely fulfilling in and of itself or he'd not have wanted to pretend something was "real" like friendship with Elena.

2. I hate/admire them for killing Grams! I've long admired the writers for always pushing forward and changing the story every week, for unflinchingly killing people off to underscore the very real hazards of living around vampires. But Grams?! The end killed me. Jasmine Guy rocks socks. The Grams that faces up to vampires despite her fear, that refuses to be a prisoner of easy safety, that fiercely defends her family and upholds her Craft. You've killed Grams?! Gah. So it looks like, with Bree gone and Grams gone that the only witch we know in the area is little newbie Bonnie--who has inherited her ancestor's mighty magical grimoire.

Mystic Falls has very few trustworthy adult figures, huh? Mr. Saltzman, maybe. Jenna, pretty feeble. The sheriff, quaking in her service shoes. The Mayor, a puppet of angry fear. WTF. GRAMS!

3. I'm surprisingly content that Anna got a happy ending with her mother. I expected she'd go up in flames the way of Ben, the incompetent bartender vamp, but was actually pleased to see her get her mom. She, like Damon, has probably spent the better part of one and a half centuries waiting and working towards the chance to get her mother free. Emily's promise *finally* came true and I'm pleased to see it. A couple lives spared in exchange for losing Grams and Ben this week. I wonder if we'll see them again? I wonder how Pearl will adjust to this sudden time-travel into the future she's experienced, reawakening again.

4. I could care less about Matt and Caroline. Really. Unless they're tangled up in vampire politics, I don't care. Though I feel more and more sympathy for Caroline every day. It is nice having her not be the snobby villain.

5. March 25th? Bleh. Olympics.
