windinthemaples: A lane of red maple trees in riotous fall color. (peace goddess)

At the end of our Italy/Germany adventure, the three of us spent the long Easter weekend in Munich. All I've mentioned, thus far, is going to Dachau but it wasn't all so heavy and emotionally wringing as that. For most of our time in the city, we enjoyed the warm weather and the plentiful flowers. We rolled around in fields of dandelions and watched surfers ride the river baffle wave in the huge Englischer Garten. We strolled the old center of town and watched the life-size brightly painted figures of the Rathaus Glockenspiel dance and joust. I ate an impressive array of potato products and Daniel ate a (disgusting) assortment of meat products. We had a lovely vacation time together.

We took a train from Rovereto, in Northern Italy, up through the Alps into Bavaria. It was all green hamlets and majestic mountains--very Heidi to my mind.

IMG_8912
In the center of town, there was a huge Farmers' Market operating. We didn't buy anything, but it was lovely to be there amongst the crowds.

IMG_8911
We really wore the wheels off this stroller--miles and miles and miles each day.

Graeme took this photograph of the tulip planters in one city plaza.

And then he started to do a butterfly dance.

IMG_8983
The whole city was blooming beautifully!

IMG_8989
Daniel had me pushing the stroller *and* carrying his coffee. We'd been walking on one of his historical walking tours for about three hours. I was a little annoyed! ;)

IMG_9002
The Englischer Garten (English Garden) is bigger than NYC's Central Park and probably the most beautiful park I've ever seen. This river meanders through it. And under a different bridge, the surfers are riding a perpetual wave created by a (somewhat dangerous) concrete baffle underwater.

IMG_9013
No, really! They ride one at a time. The wave, awesomely, never breaks.

IMG_9018
I could have watched these guys all day.

IMG_9016
There are signs posted warning that it is only for experienced surfers but this little boy was getting applause and cheers from the watching crowds. He did pretty well!

IMG_9022
The beer garden at the Chinesischer Turm, in the park, where we sat and ate/drank with thousands of picnicking strangers.

IMG_9024
Graeme had a pretzel. ;)

IMG_9035
Also a giant fried dough thing.

IMG_9040
I'm mentally calculating how many wet wipes it will take to get all the oil, salt, and clinging sugar off of his hands...and his shirt....and his pants...and his hair...and his face. ;)

IMG_9054
After all that sugar, there was running and frolicking in the fields. We were dusted golden with pollen by the time we left. :D

IMG_9048
Graeme had a flower for us.

IMG_9066
I was taking a photo of the flower Graeme gave me when I, accidentally, caught Daniel on film about to bite my neck. ;)

And after a great exhausting schlepp across the pond, we were back home in overcast, grey, cold Chicago! :D

What amazing pictures.
I love the butterfly dance, and the ones in the fields of flowers - and the huge pretzel!
and the one of Daniel about to bite your neck made me laugh out loud.

I have missed you. I have been too far away from you for too long. It feels good to get my Rachel fix... I needed one :-) thank you for being you

If I were you and it were my house (which I am not and it isn't, LOL!) I would take that pictures of the three of you lying in the grass and blow it up HUGE for my living room wall. And the one of Graeme running in the flowers? I'd blow that up too and drag family, friends and random strangers in off the street to look at it!! It is quite possibly only the most adorable picture in the history of EVER.
