Thrift Find: Speak & Math
Found At: Goodwill Lake Zurich, IL
Price Paid: $4.69
Why I'm So Excited: It is a working Speak & Math. If you don't understand how effing-fantastic that is to find in a Goodwill, it may be that we are experiencing a generational gap. I haven't seen one since I gave mine away when I was ten. Twenty-plus years of fond memories and now I have one to play with my son. :D :D

Thrift Find: Speak & Math

On any normal thrifting day, that would be enough of a !!!!YAY!!!!FIND but this day, I was combing through the Volo Antique Malls in Volo, Illinois this same day for Yule gifts and found something even more exciting...

Thrift Find: 25" x 19" Fairy-themed Stained Glass Window (OMGOMGOMG!)
Found At: Volo Antiques Mall Volo, IL
Price Paid: $150
Why I'm So Excited: I love glass in all incarnations. More than anything, though, I am entranced by stained glass. It is my favorite artform on earth so when I turned the corner and saw this propped up in a dark antique mall stall, I couldn't look away. I was on a mission to shop for other people, so I'd passed dozens of Breyers and She-Ra dolls, not to mention some glorious antique pieces. This window, though, was so phenomenal and super-reasonably priced for the size and intricacy, I couldn't leave without it. I had no real idea what it would look like in the light so I was even that much more chuffed to finally see her in the light with her dear little hand-painted face. Love, love, love, love, love. I'm over-the-moon to have found this. GAH!

Thank you! :) I'm hoping my Thrift Find entries will catch on with my Friends List. Ahem. ;)

I'd kinda forgotten how to work a Speak & Math. It isn't as idiot-proof or user-intuitive as stuff made nowadays. :D

I actually have a couple finds I haven't ever posted about... need to do that! I see one of them every day hanging on our wall and it makes me happy we liberated it from a pile of old frames and broken glass. :)

LOL! Yeah, we had the spelling one too and I doubt I'd remember it! Still, old toys have a great charm and leave more to kids' imaginations than many modern toys. Not that it makes working old toys easier, but maybe Graeme will figure it out! :)

Speak & Math was like the ugly stepchild. I mean, really, it didn't have a cameo appearance in an awesome movie of the day and it, well, is all about math which has not the street cred and cool-factor of spelling. ;)

I make stained glass panel and this one is quite complicated. The pieces are not that hard to cut, but they are tiny! and there is so many pieces in there! 150$ is pretty cheap for this piece. I would have asked at least 200$ or mayber 250$ and my prices are generally low for the market.

I love this piece. The colors and the glass texture that were used go so well together (this is the bottom line in this art. You can have the best technique in the world, if you cannot decide what glass goes well with the other, you are screwed)

You did get a great price for a very pretty piece!

I didn't know you did stained glass! I'd love to see photos of your work. As creatively gifted as you are in everything else, I'm sure you're quite good at it. :)

My mom did stained glass for a while (and I did a piece or two). She did a fairy, too, and I can say that the one you got is spectacular! Wow, she is so beautiful. Great find!

You've done stained glass? How neat! My mom and I have long threatened to take classes together. It is something I'd love to learn.

Really? Wow! I moved like 15 times between ages 10 and 20, so sadly I gave away pretty much all my toys to charity or sold them for grocery money on eBay. WahWAH! :) So I'm having to recreate that childhood through thrifting. :D

(I felt like I was stealing the fairy window, too. Like, I was really getting away with something.)

Thank you! Me, too. She was leaning against something and the weight caused a really scary bow to the window. A few days laying flat have fixed her, but I think she wouldn't have stayed intact much longer. :/

Now I just have to figure out how to hang something that heavy. I'm not too skilled at that anchor/screw/chain thing.

I KNOW!!

Daniel looked at me, looked at the window, looked at me, and then said, "You know you're not getting anything for Yule now, right?" and I was like, "I know! I don't care! Look at her!!!"

You have the best luck with thrift stores out of everyone I know... you find the most awesome items! :) And these are definitely no exception.

I would LOVE to find a Speak and Spell or a Speak and Math for my nieces....or just got nostalgia sake. I had a Speak and Spell when I was little and it helped me tremendously. Plus... it was so fun! :)
