I'm in the emergency room this morning. Woke up in the worst pain of my life, cold sweats, vomiting. I had to crawl back to bed to wake up D. Bad, bad, bad. So far they've found a large kidney stone and are running more tests to see what else I might have. The stone they did find is on the side thAt doesn't hurt, so that's why I'm still here getting poked and prodded. Thank the world for iv and painkillers. Yuck. Can't wait to get out!

UPDATE: Six hours later, I was released. They found me to have a massive urinary tract infection as well as the big ole kidney stone. I have antibiotics, painkillers, and a referral to see a urologist to deal with the stone. Do not want. Painkillers, on the otherhand, were a welcome gift along with all the iv fluids. This was my only hospital visit in life excepting G's birth. Nurses are my new heroes.

UPDATE: Oh, and that stone? The diameter of a nickel. Owww! I have no idea what to expect to pass/remove that.

Ouch! Hope that it was just radiating pain from the stone, and there's nothing else up. Wishing you well!

Thank you for the well wishes! I had a tract infection, too, so nothing too dire. :)

Oh my gosh! I hope all is well soon. Lots of love and healing wishes. Thank goodness Graeme weaned himself; now you can go with the good painkillers!

Ouch and sucky. Hope it works itself out quickly and as painlessly as possible. We have karaoke to sing after all. ;)

Seriously, I hope you feel better very soon.

They sent me home with the diagnosis of a stone, a ut infection, and painkillers to deal until I can see a urologist about the stone. Better than I'd feared with all the pain I was in.

Oh my gosh, I hope they can do something for the stone. I don't know much about them, but it sounds incredibly painful, and the infection too, but I guess infections are easier to treat. Eeek.

Oh, Rachel! I am so glad that they were able to find what was wrong and begin to treat it! I am thinking of you and hope you are fully well very soon!

What to expect...

Well the urologist may have you make dietary changes to help shrink the stone then they'd probably use a shockwave device to break the stone up into smaller passable fragments. If that doesn't work then they'd probably cut a tiny tunnel through your back at the side to the kidney and remove the stone. I've had a few big ones before and they managed to break them up without surgery. I've got my fingers crossed for you and I hope you feel better.

Had lots of female friends and family with good old kidney stones and gallstone problems. You probably won't need full surgery, but might be fine with local anaesthetic and excellent plastic surgeons doing surface work - if it comes to that.

I've worked in A&E triage (your ER) and hospitals with my niece when she had much worse kidney difficulties and have adult friends your age+ with chronic kidney failure. I'm an honorary member of UK's National Kidney Federation affiliated non-profit Young Person's Group, so can get someone else from team to chat to you about this, or just drop me some gmails.

You can get through this, Rachel. You're in very good hands. I know it's incredibly scary - but you're strong. *empathy*

L :) xx
